3.0 Summary Of Our Scotch 82 Interim Trauma Informed Care Resources...

    3.1 Prayer

1.0 Intro To Interim Resources...

In this blog post, we take a (non exhaustive) look at, or Survey of,  Trauma Informed Pastoral Care from a Presbyterian Church of Victoria Safe Church Unit perspective, and similar Trauma Informed Care.

In our 19th of August 2025 blog post update APS Survivor 'Pastoral Care', we took a (non-exhaustive) look at, or Survey of, the Combined APS Survivor Support Agencies and Authorities that helped shaped the Survivor Responses/Policies/Plans/Programs that the Associated Public Schools of Victoria Families have in place.

1.1 Interim Trauma Informed Pastoral Care Resources for First Draft

There is a large amount of information about Trauma Informed Pastoral Care to become familiar with, therefore, our Survivor Conversation would benefit greatly from having someone leading it who already has first hand experience with the creation of an APS Survivor Comprehensive (Social Media) 'Pastoral Care' Program, and it's implementation.

In our previous APS Survivor 'Pastoral Care' blog post, our non-exhaustive Survey reveals a number of types of organisations that our Scotch Family and other APS Families have incorporated into their Survivor Response/Policy/Plan/Program, as well as the related Safeguarding Children Policies.

Many of the organisations take a Trauma Informed Care approach.  In this blog post we can see there is a correlation between some of the organisations that take Trauma Informed Pastoral Care approach, the organisations the Presbyterian Church of Victoria Safe Church Unit refer to, as well as who the APS Families already have a relationship, or partner with, to meet the needs of their Survivors.

1.2 Scotch Bond

Although it almost goes without saying, whilst being a Student at Scotch College, a certain bond is formed resulting in a close knit Scotch Family (similar to what Old Boys/Girls of the Associated Public Schools of Victoria also have).

Whilst it's important to recognise the strength of our Cardinal Thread, it can also feel like a 'tie that binds' for some of our Scotch 82 Survivors in need of Trauma Informed Pastoral Care, and hence a Scotch 82/Scotch Family Pastoral Care need arises.

Our Survivors, and their secondary affected Supporters, can carry a deeply disturbing conflict - Speak Up or Suffer In Silence - about what they are experiencing, and let's face it, allowing this conflict to fester is not about resilience, especially if it leads to suicide ideation.

Furthermore, it can be very difficult to separate the Institution where the abuse occurred historically, from the Institution today, as well as from our current Scotch Family professional Pastoral Carers.

1.3 Scotch Family Professional Pastoral Carers

In this blog post, we survey the type of Trauma Informed Care (TIC) Resources available to our Scotch 82 Survivor Conversation Participants, like our Scotch Family Chaplains and our Scotch College Psychologist.

We also include past posts to our Scotch 82 Social Media profiles, and leave open the possibility of adding further posts to this blog as an Interim Resource, whilst our Survivor Conversation continues.

Most importantly, by taking a Co-designed approach to our Scotch 82 Survivor Social Media 'Pastoral Care' Response means our Survivor Conversation being open to the idea of our whole Scotch Family/Community making a contribution.

2.0 Body of Our Scotch 82 Interim Trauma Informed Care Resources...

Please Note: The Trauma Informed Care training, resources, and experience of our Scotch Family professional Pastoral Carers has not been surveyed previously.

Our Scotch 82/Family Survivors were urged to come forward, when a 2015 letter was sent out to Old Boys.

Unfortunately, shocking allegations surfaced from Old Scotch Boys, and Alumni from other Associated Public Schools of Victoria (APS), that Survivors did not receive the professional Pastoral Care they were expecting, and for some this lead to being re-traumatized.

2.1 A Psychologist Trauma Informed Care Model

As part of their University training, and before being Registered to practice, Australian Psychologists learn about Trauma Informed Care, and can undertake further post-graduate specialist training to help meet the needs of Historical Sexual Abuse Survivors and their Supporters, as well as the needs of the organization where they work.

In conjunction with the Victorian Government, and with the help of the Australian Psychological Society's Dr Zena Burgess and a number of Trauma Informed Care professional training providers, the  Transforming Trauma Victoria (TTV) was established in 2023, after the Royal Commission into Victoria's Mental Health System.

2.2.1 What Would Jesus Do?

What Would Jesus Do...

Christians look to the example Jesus set, when considering the Pastoral Care we might hope to see modelled in local congregation settings.

"A trauma-informed church does not replace professional counseling, but it creates an environment in the house of God where healing is supported rather than hindered."

This recent Church and Mental Health article illustrates what Trauma Informed Care looks like in Pastoral Care setting, as an awareness of this form of ministry grows across denominations.

2.3 A Presbyterian Church Trauma Informed Care Model

Our Scotch Family Chaplains, who provide Traditional Pastoral Care to our Scotch Family, are ordained by the Presbyterian Church of Australia.  Depending on the Trauma Informed Care training and experience our Chaplains have had, they may be able to meet our Scotch 82 Survivors and their Supporter needs, or refer them to someone who can.

It's therefore important that our Scotch 82 Survivors and/or their Supporter feel confident to ask our Scotch Family Chaplains questions about the Trauma Informed Pastoral Care they can expect.

2.3.1 Trauma Pastoral Care Training for Presbyterian Ministers/Pastors

PTSD & Trauma Informed Pastoral Care...
In this first training video of the 15 part "The Trauma Pastoral Care Series", Eric Gentry (PhD) describes Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) to Presbyterian Ministers/Pastors in the US.
Eric Gentry is considered an international expert, who teaches about traumatic stress and compassion fatigue, having trained over 100,000 health professionals, and written several books.
Eric has decades of clinical experience with trauma, Complex PTSD, personality disorders, and dissociation.

2.4 Presbyterian Church of Victoria Safe Church Unit

The Presbyterian Church of Victoria (PCV) has a long standing and continuing relationship with our Scotch Family Chaplains, and provides them with support in their Chaplaincy ministries, like through the PCV's Safe Church Unit.

2.4.1 Kooyoora

Kooyoora is an independent organisation that acts in a Facilitator role with the Safe Church Unit (see above).

2.4.2 PCV Safe Church Training

The PCV Safe Church Unit utilizes Social Media and traditional forms of face 2 face training for PCV church members, congregations, and leaders.

2.5 Royal Commission Referenced By Safe Church Unit

The Royal Commission's Schools Final Report is very helpful for understanding the struggles our Survivors had with being believed when they were Students at Scotch.  This report also is helpful for understanding the barriers Survivors and Staff had with addressing the abuse that was caused such decimation.

2.15 National Survivors Foundation APS Trauma Informed 'Pastoral Care'

The National Survivors Foundation, formally known as the In Good Faith Foundation, is a resource that can be found in our previous APS Survivor 'Pastoral Care' Survey.

The NSF can play an ongoing role in the life of an APS Family helping with their Survivors recovery, as well as establishing a Charter of Co-operation that can help Survivors feel they are not betraying their Old School by speaking up and seeking help.

2.15.1 Existing Associated Public Schools of Victoria Partnerships

2.15.2 Potential Scotch Family Partnership

The NSF has a wealth of experience it could contribute to leading our Survivor Conversation, and help with ideas about involving the whole of our Scotch Family with a Co-design process, potentially leading to a Scotch Family Comprehensive Survivor Pastoral Care Program.

2.15.4 Previous Scotch 82 Trauma Informed Care NSF blog Posts Summary

Our previous APS Survivor 'Pastoral Care' blog post, as with all of our Towards a Comprehensive Survivor Pastoral Care Response blog posts, has been emailed to our Scotch Family Professional Pastoral Carers.

References to Trauma Informed Care or outside organisations that provide Trauma Informed Care like The National Survivors Foundation (formerly the In Good Faith Foundation), that is supported by the National Redress Scheme, also appear of some of the APS Alumni websites.

2.17 Approximating Old Scotch Collegians Survivor Numbers

The affect of Historical Child Sexual Abuse, that occurred at School, on Old Scotch Collegians (whilst at Scotch or elsewhere) is complex, as can be the Trauma.  Abuse Trauma has a lasting ripple effect on our Scotch Family, as a microcosm of Australian Society in which abuse is occurring.

When calculating an approximate number of Old Boys Abused, it's important to keep in mind that our Scotch Family is not made up of Old Boys only, but a significantly greater percentage of women have been abused whilst at School too.

When asked to help how the number of Abused Old Boys could be calculated, two percentage figures were referenced by Carol Ronken, the Director of Research at Bravehearts.  The first figure comes from the Australian Maltreatment of Child Study (2023), and the second from the Royal Commission Final Report of Schools (2017).

This pictograph may be helpful when thinking about, or referring to, the organisations that also have been referred to in this blog post, in addition to the Presbyterian Church of Victoria Safe Church Unit.

3.0 Summary Of Our Scotch 82 Interim Trauma Informed Care Resources...

Social Media is currently being used by the Presbyterian Church to aid Pastoral Care, and this includes Trauma Informed Pastoral Care, which helps with reducing Survivor suicides.

In this blog post we have approximated that 1002 Old Boys could benefit from a Scotch Family Trauma Informed Pastoral Care Program.  In lieu of Scotch Family Survivor Trauma Informed Pastoral Care Resources appearing on a website, this blog post acts as a non-exhaustive interim resource.

Our Scotch 82 Survivors (and/or their Supporters) could benefit greatly from our Scotch Family professional Pastoral Carers taking a Trauma Informed Pastoral Care approach, which depends on what level of awareness, training, and experiences they already have, and the Trauma Informed Pastoral Care Resources they have available to them.

By having Interim Scotch 82 Survivor Conversation Resources, our Scotch Family professional Pastoral Carers and all of our Classmates can gain a greater level of understanding of what's involved when our year's Survivors and their Supporters seek to Co-design a Scotch 82 Survivor Comprehensive Social Media Pastoral Program.

Our Scotch 82 Survivor Conversation Participants may benefit from sourcing Trauma Informed Pastoral Care suggestions or recommendations a professional, and/or from the National Survivors Foundation, as well as other organisations surveyed in this blog post.

If our entire Scotch Family was to be involved in the Co-Designing of a Scotch Family Comprehensive Survivor Pastoral Care Program, then all year groups could contribute their experiences with the help of our Old Scotch Collegians Association Year Group Reunion Committees.

Finally, with Interim Resources to refer to, our Survivor Conversation participants potentially can make suggestions and recommendations as we head towards creating a First Draft Scotch 82 'Pastoral Care' Survivor Social Media Plan and Program.

3.1 Prayer

Please let me pray:

"Loving Heavenly Father,

Thankyou that you are Love!

Thankyou Father that you actively love us, care for us, and gift your children for service in your Kingdom.  Thankyou for bringing resources into our lives to equip us for helping each other.

Thankyou Lord Jesus for our Scotch Family professional Pastoral Carers, and their willingness to talk about the needs of Survivors, especially as it relates to reducing suicides.

Father, we pray for the unknown number of Old Scotch Collegians who are in need of Pastoral Care as Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse, and for those who have been retraumatized, or are fear being traumatized coming forward.

By the power of your Holy Spirit, please comfort our Survivors, their Families, Friends, Classmates, Supporters, and our Scotch Family who want to help with co-designing a Survivor Comprehensive Pastoral Care Program, that includes the use of social media.

Father, your word says that it's not by power, nor by might, but by your Holy Spirit that the battle is won, and so we speak your victory over the challenging circumstances and barriers so many Survivors face with receiving Trauma Informed Pastoral Care.

Please give our Survivors, their Supporters, professional Pastoral Carers, and Counsellors wisdom as we seek to walk together on the Scotch Family recovery journey.

Thankyou God that all the glory, honour, praise, and power belongs to you, in Jesus name, and for His sake, Amen!"

your servant,

Mick Arnott
